The Prado Museum stands in Madrid's Prado Avenue, which is one of the top art museums in the world, of the same class with the Louvre Museum and National Gallery. It is the supreme art museum in Spain. The museum is known to have more than 8,600 paintings. It has collected Spain, Flanders and Italy art treasures, covering the period between the 12th century through the 19th century.

The museum itself is an artwork. The western wing of the Prado (Edificio Villanueva) was completed in 1785，it is a model of classical architecture. Spend as long as you can at the Prado or, better still, plan to make a couple of visits because it can be a little overwhelming if you try to absorb it all at once.
